I believe every voice is unique and has the capability to grow. I will help you meet your goals in singing, whether it be learning how to match pitch, prepare for a college audition, or improve your overall technique in a particular style of music.
I graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor’s in Music Education from the University of Northern Colorado with an emphasis in voice, so I have an extensive Classical background. I grew up singing in musicals and took years of voice lessons with Musical Theatre repertoire, was involved in select Vocal Jazz ensembles through high school and college, and performed my own songs for large audiences in the Pop, Rock, and Alternative genres. Each style of music requires a different approach in singing and I do my best to recognize each student for their own strengths and interests. I strive to create a safe environment for my students to achieve the best results.
What does a typical lesson look like?
When we first meet, we will discuss your goals and aspirations in singing so I have a better idea of how best to structure our lessons. Are you a younger student who wants to prepare a song for your next talent show? Are you the lead singer of your band and want to perfect your technique with a song you wrote? Although the repertoire may be different, all singers can benefit from learning proper vocal technique, so every lesson will begin with vocal warm-ups that help with vocal agility, breathing, musicality, etc.
The remainder of the lesson will be spent on repertoire: depending on your interests and goals, this could include sight-reading, learning new sheet music, and/or playing a song you wrote.
What are Your Goals?
I’m not here to judge you on what your goals are but to help you make them a reality, whatever they may be.
-Maybe you’re a high school student and want to audition for the music program at a college or for All-State Choir. Then, we want to focus on sight-reading and preparing Classical songs in foreign languages (German, French, or Italian).
-Maybe you’ve always wanted to sing Jazz but you’re unfamiliar with the style. Then, we can practice things like phrasing, outlining chord structures, and microphone technique.
-Maybe you want to play a song you wrote at a future Open Mic Night. Then, we will focus on overall singing technique and stage presence.
-Maybe you’re an adult who always wanted to take choir in school but never got the chance and you’re afraid to sing in public because you’ve been told you’re “tone deaf.” Then, we will practice matching pitch with simple songs and warm-ups.
-Maybe you’re already in a band and you just want to be a better singer and/or get help with songwriting. I can help pinpoint what your trouble spots might be to help you improve and provide honest feedback.
-Maybe your only goal is to have fun and sing! That’s great too, and it’s possible!
